Meningitis is a bacterial disease spread through the air by droplets of contaminated respiratory secretions (sneezing or coughing) or through person-to-person contact (kissing or drinking from the same beverage container). Meningococcal bacteria can make a person extremely ill by infecting the blood or by infecting the fluid of the spinal cord and around the brain.
Immunization is recommended for travelers to sub-Saharan Africa, Saudi Arabia and other areas where the risk of infection is high.
